There is something organically warm about Warung Daun as opposed to the atmosphere other pretentious upscale warung and tempo doeloe restaurants of the same genre strive for. It sits somewhere between Warung Pojok and Warung Mbah Jingkrak, is Sundanese-heavy and organic in purpose, and they do a killer fried sambal on mortar — a house specialty — that goes well with anything from tumis genjer oncom (sautéed genjer and oncom), uluketek (stir fried leunca with fermented peanut cake) and orak-arik ikan asin (sautéed veggies tossed with salted fish).
The gurame kuah pedas (hot and sour gurame soup) — a localized take on the Menado staple — brims with sensational flavours but is high up on the thorn-and-bone department, while the buntut tumis cabe, a fiery dish of oxtail sautéed in green and red chillies, garlic and onion, is an ecstatic experience. Expect no long tables that dazzle with archipelagic plurality—just good, healthy food in pleasant, uncontrived environs. Also on Jl.
